Mr. Hellerman is a partner in the Litigation group of our Firm. He has acquired substantial trial experience in commercial litigation, medical malpractice, product liability and other tort matters, employment litigation, bankruptcy litigation, tax litigation involving, among other issues, the nature and extent of attorney-client privilege in tax shelter litigation, asbestos litigation, probate litigation and appellate practice. He has substantial experience in presenting and defending against motions seeking temporary restraining orders and other emergent equitable claims, having handled such matters in State and Federal courts in Wisconsin, Illinois and New York. He has also represented Fortune 500 companies and small businesses in a wide range of commercial disputes in various states, including Illinois, North Carolina, and Ohio. He also represented product manufacturers in asbestos litigation throughout Illinois for over ten years. He was a member of the trial team, which obtained the only directed verdict in favor of a defendant in the multi-district litigation stemming from a hotel fire in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also regularly practices before the Illinois Department of Human Rights, where he has successfully defended employers against charges of discrimination, as well as the Illinois Human Rights Commission and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Professional Activities and Achievements:
In May 2005, Mr. Hellerman was honored with an Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award at the Sixth Annual Awards Ceremony. Sponsored by the Federal Bar Association and the United States District Court, this award is presented annually to Chicago area attorneys who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to Pro Bono and public service work. Three of the recipients were nominated by judges, with Mr. Hellerman’s award being the only one arising out of a civil trial.
RECENT PUBLICATIONS
Mr. Hellerman has spoken and given a written presentation on “Proposed Amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Evidence” to a group of corporate and legal executives in West Palm Beach, Florida. He also co-authored a presentation entitled “Opening the File: Defense Strategies and Business Perspectives” for the February 1990 ABA National Institute Conference, and the 1989 Supplement to Chapter 10, “Quasi-Discovery,” in Illinois Civil Discovery Practice for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
